Thoriq Hamid

Thoriq has a comprehensive understanding of Maldivian media, politics and civil society. He worked in a leadership position in a prominent international NGO, based in the Maldives, for over eight years and has extensive experience in communications and project management.

He is adept at providing political analysis for donors, diplomats and international organizations, as well as engaging with political leaders, civil society, and journalists within the Maldives and abroad. He has an excellent understanding of the governance and human rights issues facing the Maldives, and significant management and fundraising experience.

Thoriq is one of the founding members of the Baani Centre for International Policy– a Maldives-based foreign policy think tank.

Paul Roberts

Paul is a British communications expert specializing in strategy, framing, messaging and crisis communications. He has extensive expertise working in the Maldives and Asia, on issues including foreign policy, climate diplomacy, renewable energy policy, and democracy and governance.

For over ten years, Paul has served as communications advisor to President Mohamed Nasheed, helping him to build an exceptional international profile. Paul played a key role in orchestrating world-renowned media events such as the Maldives’ underwater cabinet meeting, and spearheaded the country’s prominent international climate change advocacy agenda. For over three years, Paul provided daily strategic and crisis communications advice to the Head of Government of a Southeast Asian country.

Paul is also a founding member of the Baani Centre for International Policy. He is also COO of the Maldives Coral Institute.

Aishath Shazra

Shazra is a Maldivian journalist with over 10 years’ experience writing and reporting on social, cultural and environmental issues for Maldivian news publications, including the Maldives Independent.

She has worked as a fixer for visiting international journalists for over three years, supporting journalists and media crews with everything from arranging interviews and scouting locations, to travel logistics and visas.

A fluent Hindi speaker, Shazra has a particular interest and appreciation of South Asian cinema, music and culture.

Ismail Humaam Hamid

Humaam has previously worked in local media, international NGOs operating in the Maldives and at the President’s Office where has honed his skills in strategic communications, program design and implementation. At the President’s Office he was involved in drafting speeches for the President and Vice President, particularly on climate- related matters and creating messaging for various platforms.

He completed his studies in Political Science and International Relations with a minor in Economics. He has experience in providing political analysis, developing content and messaging and program design and implementation.
